Marlborough Running Club

Training

Marlborough Running Club has three regular training sessions each week.

Our main training session is every Wednesday evening, meeting at 7 p.m. at Marlborough Leisure Centre, situated at Barton Dene, just off the A4 Bath Road to the West of the town centre. Typically we run between 5 and 10 miles, in two or three groups according to speed, and taking a number of opportunities to re-group to allow slower runners to catch up and faster ones a chance to recover.  Our winter runs will generally be along quiet country roads and farm tracks (reflective tops are a must). Summer allows us to venture over the Marlborough Downs, perhaps to the Ridgeway national trail, along the Kennet Valley, or through the beech woods of Savernake Forest.

As highly-tuned athletes, we appreciate the necessity of treating our bodies with respect and the importance of ensuring proper replacement of nutrients after running. Consequently our Wednesday evening training is followed by an intensive "rehydration" session. Usually we are to be found in The Roebuck on London Road, which offers excellent recovery fluids (Guinness and London Pride are particularly popular) coupled with very good value high carbohydrate replacement foods (notably egg, chips & beans).

Enjoying the mud in the Kennet ValleyWe also meet on Monday evenings at the Leisure Centre for shorter, but more intensive training sessions, often involving hill repetitions or sprint training.

Visitors are always most welcome.

Saturday mornings are popular with our longer distance runners, not just for the 10-20 mile training runs (mostly off-road), which start at a member's house, but also for the splendid breakfast feasts provided by the host afterwards. These "breakfast runs" have been known to stretch well into the afternoon on occasions!
